The Western Samoa Rugby Football Union was officially formed in 1924 and the International side played their first game against Fiji on the 18th August 1924. The game was played in the Capital Apia and kicked off early in the morning so the home players could then go on to work. Fiji won this encounter by 6-0, they did however win the away game 9-3.

Blue Samoan Jersey

Samoa or Manu Samoa to give them their full and local title are another of the Pacific Island sides who greet their opposition with a war dance before the game. Theirs is called Siva Tau. The side wear predominantly blue strip with white shorts. The blue shirt as been donned by some household names such as: Lome Fa'atau, Domonic Feau'nati, Pat Lam, Trevor Leota, Brian Lima, Apollo Perelini, Semo Sititi, Sailosi Tagicakibau, Va'aiga Tuigamala, Freddie Tuilagi and Earl Va'a. But perhaps the most famous person working with the squad is Michael Jones who coached them from 2004.

Apart from winning the local Pacific Islands Cup on a few occasions Samoa has taken some big scalps, with wins against Argentina and Wales on their way to the quarterfinals of the RWC in 1991. They went on to repeat the feat with wins over Argentina and Italy thus reaching the quarterfinals again in 1995. They have also been a force on the seven's stage winning the Middlesex tournament in 1992 and then the sevens in Hong Kong in 1993.
