The Otago Rugby Union was formed in 1881, making it one of the longest standing unions in New Zealand. Otago play their home games in the 35,000 capacity Carisbrook Stadium, Dunedin, New Zealand. The stadium which is the union headquarters is known as the house of pain.

Otago who supply players to the Highlanders Super 14 franchise reached the semi-finals of the 2006 season of the Air New Zealand Cup. Finishing in 7th in 2007. They kick of the 2008 season with a game away to Southland on the 2nd August.
