The Harlequin Rugby Football Club was founded in 1866, though it was called Hampstead Football Club until 1870. The story goes that the name was found in a dictionary because the HFC monogram had to be retained, when the name was found and suggested every one present agreed it was a good choice, so the name was born. An offshoot of this was that there was a split in the membership of the Hampstead Football Club and the half that did not form the Harlequins went off and formed a club known as the Wasps.

The Stoop

Harlequins play their home games at; Stoop Memorial Ground, Langhorn Drive, Twickenham, Middlesex TW2 7SX. This has been their home since they purchased the 14 acre site across the road from Twickenham in 1963. The ground featured a major refurbishment programme completed for the 2005/6 season. Prior to this Quins as they are known moved around many grounds including using Twickenham the National sides stadium.

Harlequins Rugby Shirt

Quins play their games in a very distinctive kit comprising quartered multi colour shirts of blue, red, brown and grey with green and black sleeves. matching the old style harlequin suit. Probably the best known player to pull on the shirt was England Captain Will Carling, with the most capped England player Jason Leonard following close behind.
