They were originally known as the Auckland Blues and formed in 1996 when the Super 12's came into being. They are based in Auckland, New Zealand, and represent the Northland, North Harbour and Auckland unions. The Auckland Union who have a proud reputation in the National Provincial Championship have usually provided the bulk of the Blues players.

Auckland's Ground

The Blues play their home games in Eden Park, Reimers Ave, Kingsland, Auckland. The stadium is one of the homes for New Zealand Rugby and Cricket with a capacity of 48,000. The stadium will be one of the hosting sites for the 2011 RWC when it will be increased to 60,000 plus capacity.

The Blues not surprisingly play their home games in a blue shirt. The shirt has been worn by some notable players such as: Zinzan Brooke, Sean Fitzpatrick, Michael Jones, Kees Meeuws, Brian Lima, Caleb Ralph, Xavier Rush, Mark Robinson, Tony Woodcock, Doug Howlett, Joe Rokocoko, Steve Devine and perhaps 2 of the best known names in rugby Carlos Spencer and Jonah Lomu.

The Blues have a proud record of competing at the top level winning the Super 12's (replaced by 14's in 2005/6) in the first year 1996 and then in 1997 and 2003. They usually achieve at least a semi-finals finish.
