14 April - Basingstoke V St Ives

On a lovely sunny afternoon Basingstoke put on one of their best displays to claim a well deserved win against St Ives and take 5th place in South West One.

Basingstoke were on the score sheet within 2 minutes when flying young winger Karl Buttle skinned his opposite number and touched down. Mike Goodall making the conversion. Mike Goodall then posted a penalty on 5 minutes and we thought Basingstoke would run away with it, but St Ives and the referee had other ideas and power plays from their forwards and penalties allowed the visitors to post points on 10, 22 and 25 minutes to reduce the lead to 10-9.  This only stirred Basingstoke to open up and on 33 minutes Karl Buttle scored his second try for the teams to go in at 15-9 for half time.

The second half was all about Basingstoke and much like the first half on 42 minutes Carl Saunders on the other wing ran in for Mike Goodall to convert 22-9. The home side now really played some expansive rugby and ran in scores through Simon Humberstone on 52 minutes converted by Mike Goodall 29-9, Mike Goodall then posted his second penalty on 58 minutes. 77 minutes Myles Rutherford scored again converted by Mike Goodall.  The game was then rounded of when a move that saw most of the team interpassing was finished off with a flourish by Robbie Northcote on 80 minutes.  This gave us the final score:
