Scotland’s RFU to close the Border Reivers

Its been an uphill struggle and with the massive debts hanging over the Scottish RFU I guess it was inevitable that they would announce the closure of the Border reivers at the end of this season. With Edinburgh Gunners being funded by private enterprise it means that Scotland can spend all their thin cash on one club. It cannot however be good for the future of the game in Scotland, you only have to look at the growing numbers of spectators attending English Premier games to see that managed the right way there are opportunities to become pretty much self funding. The Borders has always been the heartland of Scots rugby and it’s a shame they will no longer be represented. Lets hope we do not lose the future talent to other sports.

This must also impact the Magners league as a number of players have announced in recent weeks that they are departing Reivers, Glasgow and Edinburgh having signed contracts with English, French and Irish clubs. It also begs the question should and will the Scots clubs eligible to the Heineken Cup be altered?
