Mounts Bay came to Basingstoke thinking they would continue on their winning ways, but Basingstoke had other ideas. In arguably the best game of the season Stoke laid down their marker in the opening minutes, putting the visitors under pressure and being awarded a penalty on 3 minutes which Mike Goodall duly converted. Mounts Bay hit back with a converted try on 11 minutes game on. Stoke quickly recovered their lead with a try by Dave Lambert on 15 minutes followed by a drop goal to Simon Humberstone on 28 minutes. On the half hour the home side extended their lead to 14 points with Mike Goodalls second penalty. The visitors then came back and closed the gap with 2 penalties on 34 and 37 minutes producing a half time score of 14-13 to Stoke.

The second half continued in a similar vein as Mounts Bay scored a converted try and took the lead 10-14, Mike Goodall closed the gap with a penalty on 56 minutes and then on 60 mins Dave Lambert scored a good individual try converted by Mike and now we were at 24-20. Further good work by the Stoke pack was rewarded by a fine try from Tom Northcote which went unconverted and left Basingstoke on 29-20. Mounts Bay had the last shout with a try on 76 minutes which followed an intense period of pressure on the Stoke goal line which the side repelled. The final whistle blew and a well earned victory for Basingstoke with the final score
