1848 Rules for the game
By 1848 it had become obvious that there was a clear need to regulate the rules under which football should be played and so representatives from the leading schools of the day met.
The schools who met were Eton, Rugby, Harrow, Marlborough, Westminster and Shrewsbury. The drew up what are known as the “Cambridge Rules”. The rules became accepted and these rules did allow for the running with the ball.
